Interview Preparation

Some countries take a scheduled interview to make decision on visa applications. Some however may call applicants to get further justification about the documents they submit while applying for the visa.

Applicants are encouraged to apply for their visa early to provide enough time for visa processing. Students may apply for their visa as soon as they are prepared to do so.

Prepare yourself

Before you go, spend some time thinking about yourself, your personal goals, and why you want to study in the particular country. The officer at the Embassy or Consulate will ask you a lot of questions about your future plans - both for your studies and when you return home.

Points to remember

Most visa interviews are short (one to two minutes) and are conducted in English, so good preparation is essential. It is important that you plan your answers before you go and that you be completely honest and thorough.

  • Have a clear plan of what you want to say to the officer.
  • Describe why, where and what you plan to study.
  • Demonstrate adequate funding to cover tuition and living expenses. Bring documents proving there is a valid source of funds. You need to prove that you, a parent, or someone else has the money available to cover expenses while you are studying.
  • Explain your intent to return home. Be very specific about your personal situation and avoid generalities. It is extremely important that you establish a strong motive to return to your country after you complete your studies.
  • If at all possible, do the interview in English. You may be nervous, but it shows that you are dedicated to learning and that you have the ability to study.
  • Have all necessary documents! If you forget to bring a requested document to your interview, you will most likely be denied a visa, and you will need to apply again and make another appointment for an interview.
